Saturday September 10 saw a hive of activity at the club for Finals Day despite the scaled down number of matches.  The latter being due to insufficient numbers entering the ladies’ tournament or players finding themselves incapacitated on the day of the tournament in the mixed doubles.

In the end the following matches were held:

Rookies’ doubles final,

Men’s doubles final  &

Men’s singles final

The rookies was a close fought match between Katie and Tim on one team and   Marie and Mel on the other.  The pace of the match was such that Marie had to retire with a damaged ankle in the middle of the match with her daughter picking up the baton (or racquet) and finally overcoming Katie and Tim  10-8 in the third and deciding set tie-break.   Marie and Mel were given the trophy but for all intents and purposes we could call it a draw as the losing pair were the same pair who started the match.

In the men’s doubles Tony and Trevor overcame Kim and Patrick 6-2, 6-2 to show that they are two of the strongest doubles players in the club with a lot of good net play  in evidence.

Patrick got his own back in the men’s singles by beating men’s team captain, Hugh, 6-4, 6-2 and it was a very interesting match with Hugh’s big forehand drives versus Patrick’s retrieving abilities and his consistency winning the day.

Katrina and Trevor were awarded the Mixed Doubles trophy as they were the most successful pairing in the round-robin section having won all their games.

The club’s social committee of Katie, Katrina and Suzanne put on a wonderful spread of bar-b-qued sausages and burgers (with Katrina’s Nick wearing the apron), along with Tony’s famous guacamole, all washed down with beer and Pimms.  They made a small profit of £30.00 on the day which will go towards buying food for the next event.

All in all it was a great day and a good time was had by all, especially as the weather was perfect even if any high lobs were blown out of court!
